Helping Injured East Texans

A strong desire to help others was the driving force behind David Dobbs and Deborah Tittle-Dobbs both obtaining their law degrees. While David, a native of Tyler, was obtaining both his undergraduate and law degrees in Dallas at Southern Methodist University, Deborah, a native of Dallas, was obtaining her bachelors degree in psychology at the University of North Texas and her law degree in Houston at South Texas College of Law. Careers as prosecutors ultimately brought them together here in Tyler where they worked for District Attorney, Jack Skeen. Their love of prosecution led them both into private legal careers, which allow them to continue to help East Texans.
David spent twelve years in the Smith County District Attorney office serving as Chief Felony Prosecutor and first Assistant District Attorney. He handled hundreds of trials including the successful prosecution of more than fifteen death penalty cases. His efforts have culminated in numerous awards from law enforcement agencies including the FBI, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Smith County Sheriffs Department and the Tyler Police Department. This longstanding friendship with law enforcement continues even today.
Initially, while working in the Harris County District Attorneys office in Houston, Deborah was assigned to the Child Abuse Unit. It was there that she discovered her passion for helping child victims of crime. Upon moving to Tyler, in 1991, she continued to work on these types of cases for the Smith County District Attorney office until she went into private practice as a full time family law attorney. Family law allowed her to continue to help families in crisis on a different level. Children of divorce are traumatized and regretfully often victimized by the legal process of their parents getting a divorce. The experience Deborah gained working with child abuse victims enabled her to offer a more personal and caring approach to divorce clients. Today, David and Deborah are able to continue to bring this level of care and commitment to their clients through their partnership both as husband and wife and as law partners at Dobbs & Tittle, P.C.
In addition to their busy law practice, David currently serves as President of the Board for both the Children’s Advocacy Center of Smith County and Smith County Crimestoppers; as well as serving as a board member of the Tyler Independent School District Foundation. Deborah is continuing to handle adoption cases in the family courts and is now primarily responsible for the management of the law firm.
In 1999, David & Deborah discovered a 90-years-old warehouse in Tyler in serious need of renovation. The building was originally the home of the Wadel-Connally Hardware Company, a thriving downtown business in the early 1900s. Today, this 33,000 square foot warehouse has been restored and houses not only their law firm but numerous other law firms and professional businesses. Dobbs & Tittle, P.C. currently handles personal injury claims for East Texans who have been injured through the negligence of others. Their philosophy about the practice of law is one of high ethical standards, stemming from their experience as prosecutors, as they strive to dispel the image of attorneys as “ambulance chasers”. Taking on insurance companies is a welcome opportunity for these two lawyers. They enjoy trial work and when it becomes necessary, they enjoy the opportunity to stand in a courtroom on behalf of one of their clients. Additionally, they share the desire to make their clients feel like more than just a file. Many times, individuals who have never been in an accident are surprised to find that their own insurance company is unfairly minimizing their claim. Having been injured in some type of accident, or worse, having lost a loved one, many clients call feeling helpless, angry and frustrated. It is important that they encounter a caring, concerned person on the other end of the line.
In today’s market, an accident victim has an uphill battle. Legitimate claimants must first overcome the negative stereotype created by the insurance industry. Despite actual evidence to the contrary, the insurance industry has perpetuated the myth that there is a “lawsuit crisis”. In actuality, the number of court cases and the average awards has steadily declined while premiums have continued to increase.
The reality is automobile accidents affect many people in the East Texas area. In a recent Tyler Morning Telegraph article, DPS Information Officer Jeanie Steely was quoted as saying “… Smith and Gregg County are among the deadliest counties in Texas”. With a major interstate running through the middle of both of these counties, we have large number of 18-wheelers on our roads. With several local colleges, a large percentage of our drivers are very young. With both Smith and Gregg County being surrounded by rural areas, we have a large number of heavily traveled, wooded, winding country roads. All of these factors, combined with drivers who drink and drive, make it easy to see why these counties are “among the deadliest”.
Unlike many legal advertisers, David & Deborah have chosen to focus their advertising on raising the awareness of drivers in East Texas. Their commercials encourage parents to talk with their children about safe driving and warn against drinking and driving. It is their hope that this message will not only convey their sincerity and concern as personal injury attorneys but also make a difference in someone’s life. As former prosecutors, the proud feeling of being the “good guys in the white hats” was very hard to give up. However, David & Deborah Dobbs strive to continue this in their private practice by ethically representing legitimately injured people who are experiencing tremendous difficulties due to the negligence of others.
