Helping Injured East Texans

lawyer and wife There are fingerprints on the rafters of Dobbs and Tittle’s Law offices in downtown Tyler, prints left by the men who helped construct the building a century ago. Further down the hall are fingerprints of a different kind, cards and letters from clients that tell a more recent story. Pinned to an office bulletin board are adoption announcements and crayon portraits, family photos and graduation invitations, each one an expression of gratitude, “You will never know,” reads one letter, “how much your willingness to listen and your understanding of my concerns have meant. This would have been a very difficult time in my life without the both of you. My perception of the legal profession has been altered .. [thanks to] you.”

Attorney David Dobbs and Deborah Tittle got their start working with the most desperate victims – victims of murder and child abuse. In a twelve-year run as Chief Felony Prosecutor for the Smith County District Attorney’s office, Dobbs successfully prosecuted 15 death penalty cases. His wife, Deborah Title-Dobbs, spent her early years as a lawyer working in the Child Abuse Unit of the Harris County District Attorney’s office in Houston.

Their experiences engendered an unusual commitment to their clients, a sense of compassion for victims and their families that goes above and beyond the norm. Talk to them for just a few minutes and the message is clear; Dobbs and Tittle take it personally.

David Dobbs was born in Dallas but his family moved to Tyler before his first birthday. He met Deborah, a Dallas Native, while both were working as prosecuting attorneys for then Smith County District Attorney Jack Skeen. They married in 1998 and formed the legal team of Dobbs and Tittle, P.C. in August, 2000.

Today, Dobbs and Tittle handle approximately 100 cases per year from their offices in the former Wadel-Connally Hardware Company. Deborah specializes in adoption cases and the day-to-day management of the firm. David handles business and personal injury litigation, primarily serious injury cases resulting from auto and trucking accidents. He does not, however, handle medical malpractice suits. “One of the things that makes...[ personal injury litigation] gratifying,” says Dobbs, “is that it takes me back to my days as a prosecutor helping injured crime victims, because these people are devastated by what’s happened to them, and they really need someone to look out for their rights.”

Accident victims often hesitate to seek legal counsel, he explains, because they don’t want to appear greedy or frivolous. “But the bottom line,” he says,” is it’s essential you get good legal representation as soon as possible. It’s a matter of trying to make sure you can go on, recover your lost wages .. protect your children and provide enough money to pay for future medical conditions.”

On a bookshelf in his office is a photo of Dobbs standing beside a teenager in high school homecoming gown. The girl in the photo was Dobb’s first client, a young woman whose father was killed in an automobile accident. “She was just 15 at the time,” he says, “I’ve watched her grow up.” In the photo, she is smiling, her arm draped gently around Dobb’s shoulder. “Her father couldn’t be there,” he adds quietly, “so she asked me to go instead.”

It’s this caretaker philosophy that makes Dobbs and Tittle special, a commitment to give each client the personal attention and compassion they deserve. “It’s very gratifying,” says Dobbs, “when you realize you can help someone and you’ve become a part of their life.” As such, David Dobbs and Deborah Tittle leave their own fingerprints everyday – forever touching the lives of their clients, one case at a time.
